Real Betis will need to solve a major issue if they are to sign Giovani Lo Celso from Tottenham this summer, the fact they don’t have the money to do so.
That’s according to Diario de Sevilla, who cover reports today on how Betis have reportedly asked Tottenham about a potential deal for the midfielder.
Lo Celso is believed to be on the list of players Spurs would like to move on this summer as they rebuild under Ange Postecoglou.
Betis have been linked as a result, with them still big fans of the Argentine after his time at the club earlier in his career and maintaining contact with him since his departure.
Reports today have indicated that they have now been in touch with Tottenham to ask about a potential deal, but Diario pour some cold water on that idea.
They explain that were Lo Celso to opt to join Betis, the Spanish side would have to ‘solve a problem that is not minor’ and that is his wages.
He currently earns €6.4m a year at Tottenham, a figure that Betis have no chance of paying given their budget and La Liga’s salary limits on the club.
Thus, they would need the midfielder to reduce his wages, spread them over a long contract at the club or ‘reach an agreement’ with Tottenham on that ‘very high salary’.
What the latter would be isn’t mentioned but would presumably be Spurs paying a percentage of the wages in any deal.
At the moment, though, it has to be remembered that Betis are ‘very conditioned’ by the wage bill and need several players to leave before they can bring players in.
That is very much the case with Lo Celso, who despite being on the for-sale list at Spurs, is very much out of their reach financially.
