It’s now been three weeks since the Premier League transfer window came to an end. And with a few days left for the rest of Europe to make signings, Bruno Fernandes’ situation remains the same.
Despite heavy rumours for the entire summer, the Sporting midfielder couldn’t move to England, where he was chased by Manchester United and was the subject of offers from Tottenham Hotspur.
Now agent Jorge Mendes is said to be working to move him somewhere else, but the reports still seem to be all over the place about the possibilities he has.
There are several stories about the Sporting star today. Some newspapers like Jornal de Notícias and Correio da Manhã just say that Jorge Mendes is trying to help his move, and Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid are the two biggest competitors.
However, there’s the fact that Jorge Mendes is flying to Monaco to watch the Champions League draw, and that’s where things turn into a mess.
That’s because newspaper A Bola says Fernandes could be negotiated over with the French side, especially because Sporting president Frederico Varandas will be in the city and may have contacts with the club.
However, O Jogo and Record come up with totally different claims. They do say that Jorge Mendes’ presence in Monaco could be crucial for Bruno’s transfer, but not to the French club.
The fact that other directors and presidents will be at the draw means Mendes could have a chat with them about it. These sides are named as Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Valencia, PSG and Paris Saint Germain.
So Bruno Fernandes’ future remains open, with Sporting continuing to demand €70m for his move. And in case he doesn’t leave, he’s signing a new deal with the Lions, getting a €5m bonus, due to a clause which was triggered once the Portuguese side rejected a bid from Tottenham.
Record adds that Spurs were the club who got closest to signing Bruno Fernandes, having offered €50m plus €10m, and later €55m plus €10m.
Sporting may regret rejecting those offers.
