Real Madrid will insist on a departure for Raphael Varane this summer if he refuses to sign a new deal, and Chelsea are waiting in the wings to sign him.
That’s according to ABC, who say Real Madrid are adamant Varane will not be leaving on a free transfer at any point.
The Frenchman is currently in the final year of his contract, and despite several attempts by the Spanish giants to get him signed to a new deal, that has not happened.
They have made a final four-year renewal offer to him and his agency, CAA Base, the football division of CAA Sports, but neither have replied to it.
That offer would see him increase his wages from €5.5m to €7m a year, but the lack of a response means Madrid have to plan ahead.
They are ‘making it clear’ that they don’t have the money to ‘waste opportunities’, and if Varane does not renew, as his actions at the minute suggest, they will ‘put him up for sale’ after the European Championships.
Their plan is to get between €60-70m for the Frenchman, and regardless of Varane’s plans, which could be to wait a year and go on a free, ‘the club will put him on the market’ and ‘will not let him leave for free’.
They, therefore, would have to find suitors for him and at the minute there are three, Chelsea, Manchester United and Paris Saint Germain.
The Frenchman is ‘wanted’ by all three, and Madrid would be ‘calm’ were Varane to leave at any point.
Whether any of those three would be willing to spend what Madrid want isn’t mentioned, but it has been widely reported that Thomas Tuchel will be given a war chest by Chelsea this summer after their Champions League success.
At the minute, it all depends on Varane and what he chooses, but Madrid have made it clear; if he doesn’t renew, he will be sold.
