West Ham United midfielder Manuel Lanzini has emerged as the ‘latest target’ for Marseille, according to Foot Mercato.
The 28-year-old has seen his playing time limited since he suffered a serious injury three years ago.
David Moyes has sparingly used the Argentine in the 2020/21 season, who finished the campaign by scoring only one goal.
In need to strengthen the midfield, the Ligue 1 side have their eyes on Gerson and Arsenal’s Mattéo Guendouzi, but they have now added a new name to the list and that’s of the former River Plate man.
Marseille manager Jorge Sampaoli knows Lanzini first hand after having managed him when he was in charge of Argentina’s national team, but as of now, it’s not clear what sort of a role he would have with Les Phocéens.
The South American could either compete with his former teammate, Dimitri Payet, or take his place in the French club’s squad.
Payet, who shared the dressing room with Lanzini for two years between 2015 and 2017 at West Ham, may ‘have given some information’ about his former teammate to Marseille president Pablo Longoria.
As for Lanzini in all this, it’s said he has ‘already spoken about Marseille to his French speaking teammates’, and his stance on that matter is that an exit is ‘more than wanted, and the Hammers are ‘more than open’ to his departure.
Either way, Marseille have his name on their target list and whether or not they will take further steps to sign him isn’t clear as of now.
