After failing to convince Tottenham to lower their demands for Toby Alderweireld, AS Roma have put the operation on the back burner for now.
This is, at least, what both Corriere dello Sport and Il Messaggero are reporting on Wednesday, with both newspapers understanding the Italian side have been defeated in that respect.
However, that doesn’t mean the Serie A side will give up altogether on trying to sign the Belgian centre-back, as the former of the two reckon that after the €28m release clause expires on July 25th, further contacts will be made if they haven’t found a better alternative.
Il Messaggero seem to think that’s futile, as they state the price will remain the same regardless of the clause being there or not, but Corriere certainly reckon Roma believe it’s worth a shot.
Why they think Daniel Levy’s stance would change after the expiry date is a mystery, but they are banking on the fact Alderweireld is interested in an Italian experience, having already given the go ahead by accepting the terms offered by Franco Baldini/Gianluca Petrachi.
If nothing happens, then they reckon the defender will ask for a new contract, seeing as his current one expires next year.
