Flamengo are ‘getting closer and closer’ to signing Lucas Paqueta from West Ham United and are confident he will avoid any sanctions to alleged betting offences.
That’s according to RTI Esporte, who say the West Ham midfielder has shown an interest in returning to Brazil.
They report that negotiations for the midfielder to return to his former club have gained momentum in recent weeks, particularly with Flamengo preparing to compete in the Club World Cup this summer.
The club’s board want to strengthen their midfield and see Paqueta as the ideal player to do so. The West Ham man is, however, waiting for the outcome of his trial in England for alleged betting offences.
Even with the risk of punishment, Flamengo are confident of an acquittal. A report yesterday stated it will be acquittal or ban for the West Ham man, there will be no in-between. A decision is expected in the first half of June.
In the meantime, talks with Paqueta’s entourage are ongoing. West Ham are willing to negotiate a deal but Flamengo would prefer a one-year loan deal with an extension clause and the possibility of a permanent purchase.
Paqueta’s current deal at West Ham expires in 2027 but the Hammers have the option of extending it by another year.
Flamengo are also working on dealing with the issue of salary. Paqueta earns around R$4.3m per month at West Ham, €659,190/€165,000 a week, but would be willing to reduce that to get back to Flamengo, he would still be among the top earners at the Brazilian club.
