Southampton are interested in signing Heerenveen midfielder Joey Veerman, according to claims from the Dutch media today.
Voetbal International report the Saints have been following the 21-year-old and watched him in the first game of the season against VVV-Venlo.
Veerman renewed his contract with Heerenveen earlier this summer and the club thought they had him safe, hoping he would mature for a further year with them. Now they fear a last minute bid could take him away, as Southampton ‘express interest’.
Even though he’s not forcing his way out, he wouldn’t say no to an exciting opportunity, which may be behind the ‘serious fears’ building.
Voetbal International explains Veerman doesn’t have a release clause, and therefore Heerenveen will be looking for a relatively big fee. They don’t say the exact price, and recall that Chidera Ejuke recently left the club for €12m, maybe to suggest the Saints would have to pay more than that.
The report adds an unnamed Spanish side are also interested and have made contact.
