Brazilian side Palmeiras are set to be involved in big transfer rumours in the coming months. That’s because Leila Pereira, who’s about to become their president, has been sponsoring the club for years, and is now expected to put even more money imto their accounts.
The stories have already kicked off, and one of the names who’ve been linked to the Verdão is Manchester United star Edinson Cavani.
The Uruguayan striker came close to returning to South America in 2020 and 2021, so as his contract with the Red Devils expires at the end of the season, there may be a chance for clubs in 2022 as well.
As journalist Jorge Nicola talks about Cavani’s situation today, he first rules out any chances of Palmeiras signing him in January, as the striker wouldn’t simply give up on the big salary he has in the Premier League in the middle of the season.
It’s also claimed that the player is unlikely to sign a pre-contract for now, as he should wait for the many offers that will arrive close to next summer.
Now in case Cavani does decide to return to South America, then Nicola says it’s believable that Palmeiras ‘have chances’ of competing for his signing. As one of the richest clubs in the continent, they’d be likely to compete with Flamengo, Atlético Mineiro and Argentine sides.
Since joining Manchester United in the summer of 2020, Cavani has 18 goals in 47 appearances. In Argentina, he keeps being strongly linked to Boca Juniors, who had talks for his signing last year and now wait until he’s able to move again.
