Two days ago, A Bola reported Benfica have joined Marseille in the chase for Arsenal’s Mattéo Guendouzi.

The midfielder spent the 2020/21 season on loan at Hertha Berlin after being left out of Mikel Arteta’s plans.

The situation is unlikely to change in the next campaign and another move is on the cards this summer, with the 22-year-old drawing attention from the Ligue 1 side, Benfica and Borussia Dortmund.

Despite interest from the Portuguese club and BVB, La Provence state Marseille are ‘still on pole’ to take the Gunners player.

Jorge Sampaoli’s side have had ‘fruitful discussions’ with the former Lorient man and he has ‘agreed to join Marseille’ this summer on a four-year contract. The French club now have to convince the Gunners to conclude the operation.

Arsenal ‘want to get rid’ of Guendouzi, which is why they are favouring a sale for €20m.

The figure is ‘still too high’ for Marseille, who prefer to take him on a loan deal with an near ‘automatic purchase option’.

Marseille president Pablo Longoria remains hopeful that negotiations with Arsenal can be concluded by the end of this week or early next week.

Time should tell…
