Loaning Chris Smalling from Manchester United, AS Roma strengthened their squad with an experienced player that offered them a lot during his time there, as he became a defensive leader in Paulo Fonseca’s squad.

The Serie A side would ideally like to keep him, but it’s quickly become apparent United are asking for a bit too much, and with the Covid-19 outbreak not looking like it’s going to stop anytime soon, Smalling is thinking about returning to England.

This means he will need to be replaced, and Corriere dello Sport explain the man that could solve this problem is currently in Liverpool playing under Jürgen Klopp.

His name is Dejan Lovren and he is 30-year-old centre-back in desperate need of a move as his Anfield career has somewhat stagnated.

Making just nine appearances this season in the Premier League, the Croatia international is also nearing the end of his contract, which expires at the end of the 2020-21 campaign.

With Smalling now expected to return to Manchester once his loan comes to an end on June 30th (or after, depending on how the season ends), Roma could turn their attention to Lovren, who was an idea from a ‘distant recommendation’ from Franco Baldini.

This isn’t the first time the Serie A club have been after the Croatian, as they made some late attempts last summer towards the end of August, which didn’t come to much, but the contacts were there and could easily be reopened.

It’s certainly something to keep an eye on, because if Smalling can rekindle his career like he did under Paulo Fonseca, then who’s to say Lovren can’t do the same, meaning it could be a match made in heaven for both parties.
