Arsenal midfielder Grant Xhaka was the protagonist of one of the longest sagas of the transfer window, as he was basically linked to Roma for the whole summer.
The talks were made public when, speaking to the Italian media, his agent confirmed that the Gunners and the Giallorossi could not find a financial agreement for the move.
That confirmation was made a week before the end of the transfer window, and now that any possibilities for the move have collapsed, Roma went public to confirm they failed to make the signing.
Talking to the local press today, club director Tiago Pinto didn’t mind speaking about the Arsenal player, and showed the reasons why Xhaka didn’t land at the club.
“The market is closed and today I have fun, because we bought so many players but everyone asks me about the midfielder,” said Tiago Pinto (via Gianluca Di Marzio).
“Everyone knows we were after Xhaka, he wanted to come to Roma, but Arsenal didn’t release him. It’s my regret for this transfer market ”.
Xhaka recently signed a contract extension with Arsenal and is now tied to the club until 2024 and was recently sent off during a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Manchester City.
Mikel Arteta used the player in their first four games of the season, and that’s a clear sign why the Gunners didn’t accept Roma’s request to decrease his price.
