Newcastle United showed ‘strong interest’ in a deal for Valencia defender Mouctar Diakhaby but did not make a good enough offer for him.

That’s according to Super Deporte, who say the Magpies failed to make an offer that would ‘satisfy’ the Spanish club’s demands.

Diakhaby was one of the player’s Valencia were looking to move on to free up room in their budget, with the player also keen to secure a transfer.

Newcastle were named as an interested party, and  Diakhaby was said to view that as an attractive offer if it was on the table.

However, a move never came about, with him remaining at Valencia until the January transfer window at the earliest.

Super Deporte cover the situation around him and several other Valencia players today and say, with Diakhaby, things ‘dragged on unsuccessfully’.

They explain that Valencia put him in the market, but no proposals came that matched their expectations.

Jorge Mendes was working on possible options for the Frenchman, and despite ‘strong interest’ from Newcastle, that did not materialise into an offer that would ‘satisfy’ Valencia.

There was also another issue for the Spanish side; they had little time in the window to find a replacement.

It means neither got what they actually wanted, although perhaps it will be worth keeping an eye on Newcastle again when January rolls around.
