Following the good loan spell enjoyed by William Saliba at Marseille last season, Arsenal decided it might be a good idea to do the same with Nuno Tavares.
The Ligue 1 side needed a left-back, and so a deal was struck between the two clubs for the Portuguese defender to spend the season there and then return to London.
It started off great, with Tavares finding the back of the net regularly and enjoying himself away from Arsenal, but then reality caught up with him, and his defensive weaknesses started to get exposed.
On top of that, his attitude was sometimes regrettable, and this has turned a promising relationship quite sour, as explained by La Provence on Thursday.
As explained above, his attitude has left a few at the club ‘fed up’, and because he will only have 24 months left on his contract when he returns to Arsenal, Marseille believe it ‘impossible’ for him to be granted another loan next year.
That would mean a permanent transfer would be the only way to keep him if the French side wanted to, but those in charge there ‘categorically reject’ the idea of that happening.
Therefore, what was an intense courtship in the summer will be ‘without a tomorrow’, and the player now has 12 league games to find his form again before heading back to Arsenal.
