Chelsea have been linked with a string of goalkeepers in recent months, with claims arriving, growing quickly, and then disappearing within a few weeks.
Ajax’s Andre Onana was linked repeatedly, although it often felt like the stories were being leaked by people close to the player, hoping rather than expecting an approach from Chelsea.
Jan Oblak has been another player continually nudged towards Stamford Bridge, but it’s felt an unlikely transfer given the costs involved. The Atletico Madrid player has a €120m buyout clause and earns huge wages on top of that.
Given the Blues’ level of spending already this summer, such an outlay is very unlikely.
The latest stopper to be linked is Edouard Mendy, with there being repeat claims of talks and approaches in recent days.
Monday’s edition of L’Equipe states that Rennes haven’t yet received Chelsea’s offer, and they can’t really do anything until that point.
Should the 28 year old be the man Chelsea want then they need to move forward to the decisive phase, with Rennes also having a lot of transfer business they want to do themselves.
