In the past couple of days, Newcastle United have increasingly been linked as possible contenders to sign Islam Slimani from Leicester City, with the news coming from the English media.
There are two reasons why the Portuguese press would have interest in the Slimani rumour: first because they always keep an eye on players who once belonged to the local top sides, and also because Sporting have been looking to bring the Leicester player back to the club.
So A Bola cover the story, saying that the Lions are currently attentive to all the movements around their former striker, including Newcastle.
This probably means that Sporting are waiting to see if Premier League clubs will make decent bids or not, since the Lisbon side obviously have no conditions to compete financially.
Despite having scored four goals in the League Cup, Slimani has been struggling to get playing time in the Premier League, with only nine appearances so far, mainly very brief. He hasn’t even made it to the match-day squad in the last four fixtures.
This competition from several clubs starts sounding good for Leicester, who should have many options to negotiate the player’s sale and probably get a better fee in case of a permanent move.
What’s good for Leicester isn’t good for Sporting, and the Portuguese side will accept being second best to Newcastle on finances.
