Part of their promotion revolution last year, Björn Engels didn’t have the ideal first season in the Premier League with Aston Villa.
The Belgian defender was bought from Stade de Reims for a fee of around €8m a year ago, and while he started a lot early on, his number of appearances dwindled as the campaign went on, only to never be seen again in the league after the Covid-19 break.
He’s now one of the players expected to be offloaded during the current transfer window, and it appears there is some interest in his native Belgium for his services.
According to Walfoot, Anderlecht have come knocking, ‘approaching the player’, although they would want him on a loan rather than a full transfer.
This hasn’t been greeted positively by Aston Villa, as they ‘want to sell Engels’, who is under contract with them until 2024.
Unfortunately for Anderlecht, all they can offer for now is a loan, and they might find themselves forced to turn to a ‘less onerous option’ before the end of the transfer window.
Then again, if Engels still hasn’t been sold come October 5th, perhaps there will be a deal to be done…
We now just have to wait and see if it’s a risk Anderlecht are willing to take.
