Spanish newspaper Marca claim Atletico Madrid have made an offer to Marcos Alonso.
The proposal made by Los Rojiblancos convinces the Chelsea left-back, which is why he has said ‘yes’ to the La Liga side.
As Diego Simeone lost Lucas Hernandez to Bayern Munich and Filipe Luis is expected to leave the club as a free agent, FC Porto’s Alex Telles was identified as a target, to the point where they even agreed personal terms with him.
However, the Portuguese club’s €40m demand forced Atletico to look elsewhere in the market.
That’s why Marcos Alonso has been identified as a target, who has been unsettled after being left out of key fixtures in recent months.
The Spaniard has not been a regular starter in the second half of the season as he had to face competition from Emerson Palmieri for the left-back spot.
Maurizio Sarri left him out of the squad for the EFL Cup final against Manchester City and started the Brazilian ahead of the former Sunderland man in the Europa League final against Arsenal.
Those close to him believe the 28-year-old would be open to the idea of returning to his homeland, but only to join Atletico.
The main issue remains the fee Chelsea could demand for the defender, as he is still one of their key players in the squad, on top of the Blues having to potentially face a transfer ban if CAS’s verdict doesn’t go their way.
In addition to this, Sarri’s future is currently uncertain and should he leave Stamford Bridge, his successor is likely to have a say whether or not Alonso should be sold in the summer.
Even though Alonso has said ‘yes’ to Atletico, the Madrid based club must convince Chelsea for the transfer to take shape, and the Blues hold the final say in the matter.
