We aren’t going to bore you with the details once again when it comes to Fikayo Tomori and a potential stay at Milan, but the general gist is that he’s impressing and the Serie A side need to pay Chelsea €28m to make the move permanent.
That’s been the problem all along, but the more he plays well, the harder it is for Paolo Maldini and co. to justify not triggering the clause, no matter how expensive they think it is.
Even if he doesn’t stay long, another season at this level could see them turn an easy profit in a year’s time if other English clubs come knocking, for example.
Or he could become part of the furniture at San Siro, putting his Chelsea past behind to become an unlikely icon in a different country.
In fact, Gazzetta dello Sport explain they’ve already got €15m of the €28m in their coffers as we speak, since they had set that aside in January to buy a new centre-back, eventually turning their attention to the Chelsea man via a loan instead.
So that money is there, and quick maths would tell us that another €13m is necessary to reach the full figure, which they could get from qualifying for next year’s Champions League.
Stefano Pioli’s men currently sit second in Serie A behind Antonio Conte’s Inter, meaning they are in a healthy position to achieve that goal.
It’s all lining up, but they need to keep winning, which Tomori, in turn, should help them do.
