Italian website Calciomercato believe Southampton are interested in PSV’s Jetro Willems, although their claim doesn’t immediately fill one with confidence.
On Sunday Calciomercato published an article saying: “Il Southampton pensa a Jetro Willem, terzino sinistro olandese classe 1994 in forza al PSV. Potrebbe essere l’erede del partente Betrand.’
That was it, complete with spelling the player’s name wrong.
We’ve checked the media in the Netherlands and there’s no claims on Southampton interest coming from there. An Italian website reporting on an English club with a French manager wanting a Dutch player is slightly odd.
Nevertheless, assuming there’s some truth and Claude Puel is interested in Willems, it wouldn’t be the strangest of situations.
Southampton have a record of bringing in young players on value deals and Willems would be that. Turning 23 years of age this month, Willems’ contract with PSV runs out in June 2018, putting pressure on the Dutch club in the summer window.
The left footer is primarily a left back but can play further forward too, giving a flexibility option in a squad.
It would be no huge surprise if there is interest but there’s nothing in the Dutch media pushing this story at the moment.
