Tottenham midfielder Giovani Lo Celso is yet to undergo a medical for Villarreal, despite a deadline day move to the Spanish club being confirmed by both clubs.
That’s according to MARCA and EFE, who say the Argentine midfielder is set to undergo a medical and finalise his move today.
Lo Celso was shipped out on deadline day of the January transfer window alongside the likes of Tanguy Ndombele as Tottenham boss Antonio Conte made room for new signings Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur.
He’s set to spend the rest of the season on loan with Villarreal and aid their quest to secure European football, with Unai Emery’s side currently seventh in the table.
It marks a return to Spain for the Spurs man, who enjoyed success with Real Betis before his move to London in July 2020.
The transfer has been announced by both clubs, but it seems that the formalities are actually uncompleted.
MARCA report that Villarreal are ‘expecting’ Lo Celso to arrive ‘in the next few hours’ when he will ‘undergo a medical’ at the club before having his first training session on Friday.
This is backed up by EFE, who caught up with the player on his arrival at Valencia’s airport today and state that he will ‘undergo the medical examination’ so that he can ‘close the procedures for his signing’.
It seems, then, that Lo Celso is yet to actually undergo a medical for his new club, despite having signed for them.
Perhaps because he was a last-minute deadline day deal, things have simply been rushed through, with Tottenham providing assurances that the midfielder was well.
Alternatively, perhaps parts of the medical were done while he was with Argentina, and this is simply the final bit before he’s allowed to train.
Whatever the truth is, we’re sure we don’t need to tell you it’s a strange way of doing things and something we’ve certainly not seen before.
