Manchester United could ‘appear as an alternative’ for Barcelona’s Memphis Depay, as per Wednesday’s edition of Marca.
The forward’s contract expires in 2023 and he was said to be close to joining Juventus. The report says that, at the moment, everything indicates he will not sign for the Old Lady.
Juve held a meeting with the 28-year-old’s camp yesterday and after analysing all the possibilities, Marseille’s Arkadiusz Milik is now seen as a likelier option to strengthen the Serie A side’s attack.
The Netherlands international’s demands were high, which saw the Turin club back down from a potential deal. Juventus ruling out a move for the former Manchester United man has not yet been officially communicated to Barca.
Xavi Hernández are working to get rid of Depay and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to lower their wage bill. It needs to be seen what will happen with the Dutchman, now that Juve have moved away from him.
Marca claim there are sources that indicate Manchester United would be ‘willing to bid’ for Depay. It’s said the Red Devils’ offer could be around €10m.
It would not make sense for the Premier League club to pay a fee, considering he had reached an agreement with Barcelona to terminate the contract.
In addition to this, several other claims have said Erik ten Hag’s side are keen to sign Ajax star Antony and/or PSV Eindhoven’s Cody Gakpo.
If Manchester United do have a concrete interest in Depay, there is likely to be more claims in Spain and England in the next few hours.
