Manchester City’s move for Manuel Akanji was not surprising, and the player has ‘even more potential’ to reach.

That’s according to former Switzerland defender Johan Djourou, who has praised the centre-back following his move to the Etihad.

Akanji joined Manchester City in a £15.75m deal from Borussia Dortmund in the summer after falling out of favour at the German club.

The move came as something of a surprising one from Pep Guardiola’s side given, they already have Ruben Dias, Nathan Ake, Aymeric Laporte and John Stones for the centre-back position.

The deal was seen as too good to turn down, though, and an injury for Laporte has handed the Switzerland international his chance early in the campaign.

He recently made his Premier League debut in Manchester City’s 3-0 win over Wolves, putting in an impressive performance that later earned praise from Guardiola.

He’s already impressed by what he’s seen from his new signing, but his countryman believes there is more to come.

“No, not at all. Manuel has great qualities,” he told SRF when asked if he was surprised by the transfer.

“I’m convinced that he has even more potential and can continue to improve. I know him well, we still played together.

“He is a player with a lot of self-confidence. I really hope that he can maintain this good form.”
