When Liverpool signed Luis Diaz from Porto in January, it was well known that besides the initial €45m fee paid by the Reds, there would still be potential €15m related to performance bonuses.
With the player having a quick impact in Jurgen Klopp’s side, we’ve seen in May newspaper Record featuring a story saying the Anfield club wouldn’t be needing to pay those add-ons just yet.
That’s because they were tied to objectives which would only start counting when the 2022/23 season started.
It turns out, however, that as local Porto newspaper O Jogo today writes about this subject, they claim Liverpool are actually ready to pay the Dragons extra €1m.
Counting all the appearances Diaz made for the club, it’s claimed that the winger now has 25 games for the Reds with at least 45 minutes played in each. That means one of those bonuses, which could be repeated up to five times, has already been triggered.
Taking claims from Transfermarkt to say Liverpool must pay other €1m for every 15 goals Diaz scores for the club, O Jogo points out the player isn’t far from that, as he already found the net 10 times.
That can also be repeated five times.
The other bonus, also of €1m each time it is triggered, is related to Liverpool’s qualification to the Champions League.
With the newspaper confident that Diaz and the Reds will do well this season, they believe the transfer could come very close to €50m by next summer if the Colombian plays another 25 games, as well as helps his team with goals and gets them in European’s top competition.
Either way, with Portuguese clubs being very transparent with their accounts, we should soon know if O Jogo are right about last season’s stats being counted for those bonuses.
