Liverpool ‘were interested’ in a deal for Real Madrid defender Nacho Fernández when they were hunting for defensive reinforcements this season.

That’s according to AS, who bring up the Reds interest in the defender as part of their coverage of his future at the Bernabeu.

They explain that while all the focus is on Sergio Ramos and Lucas Vázquez, both of whose contracts expire in the summer, there is also a need to discuss Fernández, whose deal expires in 2022.

The newspaper argue that talks ‘should begin to be done every day’ until there is a happy conclusion as the player has become a ‘fundamental pillar’ in Ramos’ absence.

Indeed, he ‘must play’ against Liverpool and Barcelona after the international break because ‘his performance requires it’. In other words, his performances have been so good he’s now a key player, and that brings his future into focus.

The player’s ‘dream’ is to stay with the club he’s been with his entire career, and Zinedine Zidane is also ‘convinced’ that he needs to stay at the club.

However, interest from the Premier League and Italy cannot be ignored. Roma already knocked on his door twice, as did Juventus.

Liverpool, meanwhile, ‘thought of him’ amid their recent plague of injuries in defence, but the defender is not interested in the interest from elsewhere and more focused on winning things on the pitch with his boyhood club.

So, if you happen to see this rumour in the near future, you know where it comes from and how it can be pretty much dismissed.
