Barcelona and Frenkie de Jong are under ‘pressure’ to seal a move away this summer, and the player reuniting with Erik ten Hag at Manchester United would make sense.
That’s according to analyst Aad de Mos, who believes the Catalan giants have sensed an opportunity to ‘increase their war chest’ by selling the Dutchman.
De Jong has been heavily linked with a move away from the Camp Nou for several weeks, with it believed Barcelona chiefs are looking to get rid of him as they look to balance the books.
Barcelona’s finances are currently in a precarious position, and there is a plan to sell several stars and get rid of their wages, with De Jong seemingly at the top of the list.
Manchester United have emerged as the leading contenders for his signature, particularly after Ten Hag was appointed as manager.
He has a longstanding relationship with De Jong following their time together at Ajax, where the midfielder was the star of the show before his eventual move to Barcelona.
The Manchester United manager is now keen on a reunion as he looks to rebuild United’s midfield, with Paul Pogba departing and Nemanja Matic following him.
And De Mos believes that is a deal which would make sense, as Ten Hag knows how to get the best out of the player.
“I don’t know what Barcelona’s financial capabilities are at the moment,” he told the Twee Viertje on Onlinewedden24.
“I think they are trying to get a Spanish midfield with Gavi, Pedri and Busquets and that they want lots for Frenkie de Jong because they know that he is wanted in the market, especially with his ex-coach Ten Hag.
“They sense opportunities to increase their war chest, which they have many difficulties with. I can imagine it’s not just the position but the pressure on both of them to break up.
“The first requirement for a coach is, something that Van Gaal has mastered well, to put the players in the right place where they will show their best. I think Ten Hag knows best how to use Frenkie.”
