Chilean newspaper La Cuarta hasn’t had a break over the Christmas period, with their December 25th edition carrying a big story about Arturo Vidal and Chelsea.
La Cuarta claim Antonio Conte is leading Chelsea’s attempts for Vidal, having been a big fan of the player for some years. Conte is said to have taken matters into his own hands and has telephoned Vidal in recent days.
The Chelsea boss wanted to convince the midfielder that London, rather than Munich, is the best destination for him next season. Conte’s personal touch is thought to be something to assure Vidal how much he’d be wanted.
On top of that, La Cuarta say Vidal was told he’d earn $18m per year at Chelsea, giving him a big increase on his Bayern Munich wages.
But even if Conte can convince Vidal about a move to Chelsea, the next step would be talking to Bayern Munich.
The German side are going to want a big fee, and it may be questionable whether Chelsea would be keen to pay one, given Vidal turns 31 years of age in May.
With a contract ending in June 2019, this could be a play for a Bayern extension, although such tactics haven’t worked for others with the Bundesliga side.
