When it comes to picking your squad number, players come up with all sorts of reasons why they want a specific number.
From choosing their lucky number to that of their football idol, there’s usually a specific reason why a player will request a particular number.
For Christian Eriksen and Inter Milan, it appears he’s chosen the number as a massive middle finger to former club Tottenham.
The Danish midfielder joined Inter from Tottenham today, bringing an end to his seven-year spell at Spurs and the saga that has followed him since last summer.
He’s picked the number 24 at his new club, according to Sky Sports Italy, and most would have assumed this was a tribute to the late Kobe Bryant, who wore that number for the LA Lakers.
However, Sky Italia claim Eriksen had chosen the number before Bryant’s tragic passing this week, and the reason behind his choice is not one of homage, but a last attempt to throw shade at his former club.
According to them, Eriksen has chosen 24 as he considers Inter ‘a step ahead’ of Tottenham and an ‘improvement’ in his career and thus he’s chosen his new shirt number to represent that.
That’s unlikely to go down well with Tottenham, who at this point are probably quite pleased they’ve gotten rid of Eriksen and made a reasonable price on him at the same time.
