Sporting president Frederico Varandas has ‘not given up’ on signing Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo before the window closes.
That’s according to Correio da Manhã, who state the Primeira Liga chief is of the belief the Red Devils are ‘receptive’ to letting the forward go out on a loan deal.
It’s claimed Manchester United would be willing to pay almost all of Ronaldo’s salary. The president knows he will have to make a financial effort, but that can be offset by a large chunk of money his side could receive through ticketing and marketing.
Varandas has been in talks with Jorge Mendes and found out there is an opening for the 37-year-old to return to the club. The player wants to leave Old Trafford for a Champions League club and that is something the Lions can offer him this season.
Correio da Manhã state Varandas has ‘run into the opposition’ from Rúben Amorim. The manager is not in line with the president’s idea to bring Ronaldo. In fact, there is ‘strong opposition’ from Amorim.
Although Amorim values the Portugal international’s qualities, he believes the star’s arrival could have ‘serious implications for the rest of the squad’. He is also of the belief Ronaldo can have a ‘negative impact’ in the dressing room, if things don’t go as per the plan.
Sporting have managed only one win from their first four matches, where they scored six goals and conceded eight. After suffering a defeat against Chavas on Saturday, Amorim was again quizzed about the Ronaldo links.
Responding to that, as quoted by O Jogo, he said: “He is a Manchester United player and I think he will continue to be…”
