Frenkie de Jong has not ruled out a move to Chelsea this summer, should the Blues make a move for him.
That’s according to Sport, who say that the midfielder would consider Stamford Bridge as an alternative destination if he is forced out of Barcelona.
The newspaper explains that De Jong would prefer to stay with the Catalans this summer but is aware the club want him to leave.
Should he need to do so, he does not want to play for Manchester United but does not rule out Chelsea ‘as an alternative’.
His first choice is to remain at Barcelona but would ‘not look unfavourably’ on the alternative of signing for another big European club.
He is aware that his biggest offers come mainly from England, and although the Premier League is not a competition he loves, he is ‘not closed to a transfer to Chelsea’.
De Jong sees Chelsea as a club with a sporting project and structure that match his sporting aspirations, mainly because he wants to play in the Champions League next season.
Under the guidance of Thomas Tuchel, he would be in a position to win the Premier League and Champions League. London is also a ‘very attractive city’ to live in.
Chelsea know that Manchester United have reached a pre-agreement for the midfielder, and they are ‘waiting’ for the deal to ‘fall through’ before they can make a formal offer.
They would still have to wait for De Jong to reach an agreement with Barcelona over his wages as the Dutchman is owed a sum after deferring his wages during the pandemic.
Those are yet to be paid, and he is insistent on getting what he is owed, so any transfer away from the Nou Camp is second to that.
