Currently under investigation by the Club Financial Control Body (or CFCB), AC Milan are awaiting the decision that will define their summer.
The potential sanctions imposed for breaching FFP are numerous and vary from lenient (limit on transfer spend/reduction of squad size in European competitions) to harsh (complete ban from the Europa League next season and loss of revenue).
If it were the latter of the two, then Milan could wave their top target for the summer (Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata) goodbye.
Gazzetta dello Sport on Tuesday report this, explaining the Spaniard has already made moves to try and return to Italy, having left London a few days ago, spotted on Sunday night dining in Turin.
Of course, this could also mean getting closer to Juventus, who are also said to be interested.
Either way, it’s his family’s wish, including his wife’s, pregnant with twins, for him to make a Serie A comeback.
Milan’s interest in Morata dates back to last summer, with Gazzetta revealing the club’s director of football, Massimo Mirabelli, already put an intermediary, Beppe Bozzo, on the case.
Furthermore, the board member has also already met with Morata’s sole agent, but the player would only come if European football was available.
Should the CFCB decide to exclude Milan from the Europa League, then the deal would be dead before it even started.
And, even if the Italian side were allowed to play in the competition but were imposed a restriction on spending, buying a €70m player would need similar sales to balance things out.
The only realistic scenario in which Morata could move from Stamford Bridge to San Siro without any issue is if the CFCB change their Europa League squad size.
Anything else, and Milan will most likely turn to Radamel Falcao instead, with André Silva either going the other way to Monaco, or potentially ending up in England with Wolves.
In summary, before anything happens, the CFCB have to announce their decision, meaning everyone, including us, has to wait and see what happens.
