Newcastle United are pushing for the transfer of Kieran Trippier and his exit could see Atlético Madrid look for a new right-back in the winter market.
This is according to AS, who say Chelsea star César Azpilicueta is the ‘favourite’ target for Diego Simeone.
In the event the England international leaves the Madrid club, then the latter could not only look to replace him, but also look to sign a new centre-back. This is a position that was overlooked in the last window and has become a ‘necessity’ to strengthen in January.
Azpilicueta can operate in the heart of the back four, in a three-man defence or as a fullback. Therefore, the 32-year-old’s name has been considered by Los Rojiblancos because his signing can help them bolster multiple positions.
The Blues defender has entered his final six months of contract and the report states that it does not seem the versatile player will sign an extension with Thomas Tuchel’s side. As things stand, the Spain international can leave the Champions League winners as a free agent next summer.
AS are of the belief that Chelsea will ‘agree to negotiate’ his sale this month, so that they can make money rather than letting Azpilicueta leave for nothing after this season.
