Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta is ‘convinced’ that the club will release him this summer so he can join Barcelona.
That’s what Sport report today, stating that he plans to talk to those in charge at Stamford Bridge to make a move happen.
The newspaper explains that Barcelona are in the ‘final stretch’ of the potential deal for Azpilicueta, having chased his signature for several months.
There is a ‘confidence’ at the club that Azpilicueta will end up back in Spain and the defender is ‘convinced’ that those in charge at Chelsea will let him go on a free as a reward for his time at the club.
He already has an ‘agreement in principle’ with Barcelona to sign for next season and has been clear for months that this is the move he wants.
He’s convinced by the economic offer on the table and believes the sporting project being offered by Xavi is right for him. He even has an ‘agreement in principle’ with Barcelona in place.
He wants to settle his future as soon as possible, but things are currently in the air due to the ownership situation at Chelsea.
The Blues have a unilateral clause to extend Azpilicueta’s deal at the end of the season, given his contract is set to expire in the summer, but whether they want to activate it or even can do so amid sanctions isn’t fully clear.
Azpilicueta wants things cleared up and is hoping his good relationship with the club will work in his favour and ‘plans to talk’ about his future with Chelsea chiefs now they’re out of the Champions League.
All parties involved now believe that Azpilicueta will be given the ‘green light’ for a move at the end of this month or early May, but Barcelona are willing to wait either way.
That’s because Xavi likes the player very much due to his experience and versatility, both of which make him a very ‘desirable signing’.
