Chelsea have ‘announced concrete interest’ in Borussia Mönchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter, but the German club are likely to resist any offers for him.
Ginter has enjoyed an impressive campaign with the Bundesliga side, helping them to secure Champions League football and ranking as the best centre back in the division alongside Mats Hummels.
His ‘strong performance’ has not gone unnoticed, according to Kicker, with three ‘big names’ in the industry making their interest known.
One of them are Chelsea, who it has been rumoured may be on the lookout for a new centre-back this summer given the problems they had in that position this season.
The Blues, alongside Atlético Madrid and Inter Milan, are said to have made it clear they have ‘concrete interest’ in the 26-year-old.
However, Borussia Mönchengladbach are not keen on losing him, and manager Max Eberl stated publicly on Monday that the club would “not sell any of our cornerstones” this summer.
Ginter’s contract situation could play a part, though. He has a deal that runs until 2021 and while there is an option to extend until 2022, which is ‘very likely’ to be activated there is still a concern that last year may be their last chance to make money on him.
Inter, in particular, are ‘luring’ him with a massive transfer fee and salary offer that would see him ‘advance into the high single-digit million range’ in terms of his annual income.
The suggestion is that could prove tempting, while Mönchengladbach may be also be convinced to sell should it be clear Ginter won’t sign a new deal.
At this stage, Chelsea are only interested, and there’s no suggestion they’ve made a move, although if they want to, they may move quickly to avoid being beaten to the punch by former manager Antonio Conte.
