Only two Premier League players have made it into Gazzetta dello Sport’s European Team of the Week.
Down from the usual three, the men included are Olivier Giroud and Ander Herrera.
The Manchester United midfielder loves a shot. Unfortunately for him they usually end up high, wide, or both, but at the weekend all the stars aligned and Herrera found the back of the net with a crucial goal against Tottenham.
Gazzetta dello Sport, who choose their selection from around Europe whilst ignoring their own Serie A, were clearly impressed, calling Herrera ‘The Basque magician of Mou’.
The Manchester United player got got 7/10 which is a good score for the Italian newspaper.
On 8/10 was Giroud, who scored a brilliant goal for Chelsea as they beat Southampton at Wembley. Gazzetta dubbed the Frenchman’s contribution ‘poetic’ and he’s also got another accolade.
Giroud’s goal against Southampton has been chosen as Gazzetta’s goal of the week, the ‘Euro Gol’, and the newspaper explain: ‘If you talk to a master of martial arts, he tells you: the toughest adversary is not the best, but the one who does things you do not expect.’
Also in Gazzetta’s team are Andres Iniesta after his brilliant performance in the Copa del Rey final, and Jadon Sancho, with the former Manchester City youngster getting a goal and two assists for Borussia Dortmund.
