Chelsea are set to release midfielder Marco van Ginkel this summer, with a return to PSV Eindhoven on a permanent basis in the offing for him.
That’s according to Voetbal International, who say the Chelsea midfielder will talk to the Dutch side ‘shortly’ about a move.
Van Ginkel has been at Chelsea for eight years but managed just four appearances for the first-team, largely due to several long-term injuries.
His contract at Stamford Bridge expires this summer, but they have an option to extend it by another year should they wish.
That has looked unlikely to happen for some time, with Van Ginkel recently admitting that he felt the club would elect to let him go.
Voetbal International say that has now been decided, and Chelsea have opted not to extend his stay at the club.
As a result, PSV can ‘pick him up for free’ and the club and Van Ginkel will ‘talk to each other shortly’ about extending his stay there.
The Dutchman has had three separate loan spells with PSV in the last few years, first joining in 2016, returning in January 2017 and then again in October last year.
He only has 11 appearances for them in the Eredivisie this season but has played an important role in their last three games, and Roger Schmidt is keen to have him back.
In fact, the two parties meeting each other ‘will sound like music’ to the PSV coach, who has been impressed with the midfielder’s professionalism since working with him.
