There have been a lot of mixed messages when it comes to Davide Zappacosta’s future at AS Roma, but the general consensus is that the Italian club wouldn’t mind having him around next year.
The Chelsea player has had an incredibly unlucky season, playing just 12 minutes of football altogether and spending most of the time in the physio’s room nursing various injuries, including a serious knee ligament problem that is now close to being behind him.
His loan was meant to make him the starter down the right-hand side of Paulo Fonseca’s defence, and it’s something the Portuguese would like to actually try, but for that to happen, the Blues need to be kind.
Gazzetta dello Sport explain that Zappacosta has two goals in mind at the moment, and they are to convince AS Roma to keep him beyond the current season, which would then help him in his bid to achieve his second desire: making Roberto Mancini’s 23-man squad for next year’s Euros.
As things stand, the Serie A side are ‘thinking’ about the possibility of keeping the Chelsea loanee, which would require the Premier League club to agree to extending his current temporary deal.
It’s something the Italian media feel shouldn’t be too much of a problem since Frank Lampard has no use for the 27-year-old at Stamford Bridge, and there’s little chance of them selling him this summer following his injury-filled season.
Therefore, a chance for him to play regularly next year and hopefully increase his stock on the market is a benefit for all parties.
After spending the quarantine away from his family by staying in Rome, Zappacosta is back and raring to go, patiently waiting for the season to start again.
