Celtic still have a chance of signing Riley McGree, according to claims from Belgium. Het Nieuwsblad report in their Friday edition that McGree is attracting the interest of several European clubs, with Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic named as competition for Club Brugge.
McGree has been linked to Celtic previously, but it looks like the time for a transfer is now getting closer. Registered to Adelaide United, the 18 year has underdone medical tests with Club Brugge, but Het Nieuwsblad make it very clear the medical is just in case a deal is agreed, and McGree is still to talk to other clubs.
Celtic are the only other club named, and Club Brugge’s plan to get a medical done anyway makes some sense given McGree will soon have to fly back to Australia.
The Scottish Premiership side may have an advantage, with Adelaide furious over the Belgium medical. The club’s manager Greg Griffin is quoted by the Adelaide Advertiser as saying: “It’s a breach of contract. Riley is a teenager and we’re taking this to FIFA. We have not consented in any shape or form to him having a medical.
“We are simply not signing transfer papers because we have already rejected two offers from the club. We have not agreed to anything to sign the transfer. My issue is with Club Brugge.
“I have told Club Brugge twice after two offers to go away and perhaps because they’re not getting what they want they’ve gone behind our back.”
Maybe that’s the chance for Celtic to step in, should they wish to tie up a deal with the young midfielder.
