Dedryck Boyata has a good chance of playing a part for Belgium at the World Cup, and HLN report his chances have increased given Vincent Kompany’s fitness situation.
The Manchester City defender picked up a fitness issue over the weekend and given his past with injuries it’s created a lot of doubt ahead of the World Cup. Boyata worked with Kompany at City before signing for Celtic, and HLN point out the pair are good friends.
That’s why Boyata’s statement of wanting Kompany to be fit enough for the World Cup is taken as sincere, rather than the usual footballer guff.
Celtic’s defender came on for Belgium with just over half an hour of the match against Portugal left, as Kompany left the pitch. There’s a chance the 27 year old could retain his place, depending on what happens with the City captain.
Playing well after coming on, the Celtic defender is quoted by HLN as saying: “Of course it can always be better, I’m a perfectionist.”
With a contract ending in June 2019, talks for a renewal are said to be ‘underway’, Brendan Rodgers will hope Boyata does well at the World Cup, but perhaps not so well that it brings clubs in to disrupt those talks.
