Antonio Cassano has never been afraid of sharing his opinion with the masses, and the more controversial the better for him.
Since he retired from playing, after a career spent at clubs including Bari, AS Roma, Real Madrid and both Milan sides, Cassano has been speaking as a pundit and often seems to have someone in his sights.
Recently he’s taken aim at Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku a few times, and now his attention has been turned towards Tottenham, and specifically the two men in charge of Spurs’ footballing fortunes.
The London club this week announced Antonio Conte as their new manager, and that’s widely been seen as a really good move from managing director Fabio Paratici. Tottenham had wanted the manager in the summer, but at the time he wasn’t tempted enough by the club’s project.
Cassano first went for Paratici, quoted by JuventusNews24 as saying: “An incompetent, he found himself at Tottenham and doesn’t even know how, he already had an agreement with Fonseca but he took on a coach of Jorge Mendes, Nuno Espirito Santo. Now he has gone to get Conte.”
Then his sights turned to Conte, with Cassano going way over the top in his criticism of the Spurs boss: “In June he was asked by Tottenham, they called him and he said no, after three months he says yes. How come he has never been considered by Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern or these top top teams?
“Everyone says he is a phenomenon and brings results but the top clubs are not looking for him. United have never asked for him either. What I think is that the top four, together with Milan, have made history in the world, none of these have ever looked for him. He doesn’t have that top manager status, to let the team play in a certain way. I believe that the status of Conte is not first or second, but third level. He is good at rebuilding but does not give a beautiful, winning game.”
Tottenham fans won’t be too concerned with what Cassano says, but it’s certain should Conte hear about it then he’ll have even more motivation to make a success of himself with the club.
