Sheffield Wednesday are one of a handful of Championship clubs who regularly have match officials at Portuguese league games. It makes sense that manager Carlos Carvalhal will use his knowledge of football in Portugal, and connections with clubs in the country, to try and find potential recruits for Sheffield Wednesday.
With the winter transfer window well and truly open, Carvalhal had one of his spies watch the match between Estoril and Maritimo on Saturday night. The Sheffield Wednesday official won’t have been hugely entertained as Maritimo won the match 1-0.
No other English club sent a scout or official to the match, but an interesting talking point is that Bebeto, he of rocking the baby celebration fame, was in attendance as a guest.
As for who Sheffield Wednesday have their eye on, there’s no indication whatsoever from A Bola, who are reporting the visit.
It’s worth pointing out that Sheffield Wednesday have been watching Estoril intently over the past year.
There’s certainly someone catching the eye, and given the repeated trips perhaps it’s now time to make a transfer approach.
