Liverpool fans, let’s cast your memory back to 2016, when the Reds were interested in a relatively unknown player called Piotr Zielinski.
The Polish midfielder had broken through on loan during a two year spell from Udinese at Empoli, and caught the attention of Jürgen Klopp, only for Napoli to then swoop in and beat the Anfield side to the transfer.
Well, fast forward seven years, and the interest from the Liverpool manager has yet to fade, as Valter De Maggio, speaking on Radio Goal, relayed by Calico Napoli 24, claims the Premier League side still want to sign the now 29-year-old.
Asked about whether the player could leave Naples in the foreseeable future, with interest from various Serie A sides, the director of Kiss Kiss Napoli sent a warning to everyone.
He said: “Be careful, it’s not just the Italians on Zielinski. There’s also Klopp’s Liverpool.”
With just eight months left on the player’s contract at Napoli, January could be the ideal time for Aurelio De Laurentiis to get a deal done, as a failure to do so could see the midfielder leave the Serie A side on a free.
Therefore, if done right, Klopp could end up with a player he initially wanted seven years ago with far more experience under his belt and ready to contribute immediately at a cut price.
One to monitor going forward.
