Jadon Sancho to Manchester United was the biggest rumour of the last summer window, despite a deal not seeming particularly close at any time. Borussia Dortmund set a deadline for the player’s exit, and insisted he wouldn’t be going to Old Trafford or anywhere else after that.
Manchester United didn’t appear to test that resolve and it seemed they were keeping the potential signing at arm’s length. Other purchases were then made to strengthen the club’s right side of attack for the future, and Sancho was left in Dortmund.
This season hasn’t been a happy one for 20-year-old, and he’s yet to score a goal in the Bundesliga. Dortmund themselves have been going through a difficult time and find themselves fifth in the league.
Sancho has been getting a lot of media attention, with suggestions his head was turned by the Manchester United rumour circus, and BVB have been waiting for him to hit top form again. With German football having a break over Christmas, a chance to return to England and see family was seen as a positive opportunity for Sancho, but that’s now been cancelled.
Germany has taken steps to restrict travel from the UK following the discovery of a more infectious strain of Covid-19, so Sancho wouldn’t have a clear return date. Kicker report that given Dortmund want their players back in training by the 29th, the risk was just too high to take.
The summer Manchester United drama is mentioned once again, and if it is that which has impacted Sancho then he’ll have to find a way to clear his head in Germany over Christmas.
