At the end of the summer transfer window, West Brom made an attempt to sign Franco Di Santo from Bundesliga club Schalke. The 27 year old Argentine has played in England for Chelsea, Blackburn Rovers, and Wigan Athletic, and Tony Pulis obviously thought he could offer some depth.
It was explained at the time that Di Santo wasn’t interested in returning to English football at that stage, he was happy at Schalke and wanted to continue with the German club.
Given his form this season, that may have been a blessing. Schale have been having a terrible season, losing their first 5 Bundesliga games, before finally getting a victory against Borussia Monchengladbach.
Di Santo hasn’t scored a goal this season and Bild say he’s on the club’s ‘scratch-list’ as an overpaid star who isn’t performing. Bild have been highly, and probably overly, critical of several Schalke players this season, but it mainly stopped after the Gladbach match.
Not so for Di Santo.
He’s an expensive flop earning €4m a season, say Bild, and West Brom’s summer interest is again mentioned.
