Real Madrid are increasingly happy that they didn’t compete with Arsenal for Kai Havertz this summer, considering the German a ‘bullet dodged’.

That’s according to AS, who say Havertz is the ‘the bullet that Madrid dodged’ given his poor start to life with the Gunners.

The newspaper explains that after Karim Benzema left Real Madrid for Saudi Arabia, it seemed that the battle to replace him would be between Havertz and Harry Kane.

In the end, Madrid decided not to move for either player, considering the prices being asked by Chelsea and Tottenham as too high and looking elsewhere.

Havertz eventually moved to Arsenal in a €70m deal, a ‘very high figure’ that Madrid were never going to match or get near.

That’s proving to be a smart piece of business for them as so far, the German has failed to shine for the Gunners, with seven games gone and ‘very little contribution’ from the midfielder.

He is yet to score a goal or provide an assist and has subsequently found the criticism starting to creep up and that €70m price tag ‘already seems like a lot’.

Madrid are certainly happy they didn’t pay it at this point, watching afar from Spain and very much believing they’ve dodged a bullet and let it rest solidly in Arsenal instead.
