Last Thursday, we covered the last on Brighton & Hove Albion’s efforts to sign Independiente youngster Alan Velasco.

It was said the Seagulls had doubled their offer to $10m for the Argentine, but that was still deemed insufficient by his current owners.

Independiente were asking for $15m, which Brighton are trying to avoid, but they may not have a choice as Newcastle United have also decided to join the race for the 18-year-old.

That’s according to journalist Daniele Trecca, who reports on Monday morning that Brighton have put forward a ‘new bid of $12.5m total’ in order to ‘beat the competition of Newcastle as well as French, Italian and Mexican teams’.

Brighton and Independiente are currently having ‘direct contacts’ regarding the transfer, but it ‘still isn’t done’, meaning there is still a chance for the Magpies to swoop in and pip Velasco from under Graham Potter’s nose.

We’ll now have to wait and see how badly Steve Bruce wants the young Argentine, who made 17 appearances in all competitions for his club this season, scoring one goal and assisting two others.
