On Monday evening, Brazilian outlet UOL broke the news regarding Brighton & Hove Albion’s approach for Palmeiras manager Abel Ferreira. It was said the Seagulls had made initial contact to take the coach to England, and the attempt was turned down quickly.
Now as more reports from the local media comment on the story, we start to see the main reasons why the move seems to be unlikely.
Lance claims to have ‘confirmed’ UOL’s information, saying Brighton’s attempt was ‘blocked’ because there’s no interest from the manager in leaving Palmeiras.
It’s said the same had already happened with other clubs from outside of Brazil. The main reason for Ferreira to stay is his recent contract renewal, which includes a good pay rise, plus the fact he brought his family to live with him in Brazil. He’s also said to be focused on winning the league title this year, and given the club are top of the table after 26 fixtures, he’s very likely to do it.
Meanwhile, R7 features a very similar story, claiming that before Brighton, the coach had already turned down approaches from Valencia, Granada, Benfica, Lyon, besides others from Saudi Arabia and Qatar. It’s also said he revealed to people close to him that he’s only going to Europe when taking charge of a club with conditions to fight for titles.
Right now, that isn’t Brighton.
