Brentford’s Frank Onyeka has been hailed by Augsburg manager Jess Thorup after an ‘outstanding’ debut for the club.
Complete Sports cover comments from the Augsburg boss today after Onyeka made his debut in the win over St. Pauli on Sunday.
The 26-year-old was a late arrival at the end of the transfer window, joining on loan from Brentford until the end of the season on August 30th.
The midfielder has been with the Bees since 2021, when he joined in a €10m deal from FC Midtjylland, but had seemingly been deemed surplus to requirements this season.
That’s seen him head to Augsburg on loan for the season, where he will be hoping to establish himself as a key player and get the regular minutes that were not on offer under Thomas Frank.
Sunday saw him handed his debut in the Bundesliga clash with St. Pauli, playing 83 minutes before being withdrawn.
Those 83 minutes saw the Brentford man put in an impressive display, grabbing an assist for Phillip Tietz to make the score 2-0 in the 66th minute and earn big praise from Thorup afterwards as a result
“He (Onyeka) only trained twice and was involved in the international games,” he said after the game.
“He showed us from the start what a good player he is. He’s ready to help the team and he did that today.”
“Maybe the only thing missing was the goal at the end, even though he had an assist and played very well. For a first game it was really an outstanding game.”
