French midfielder Morgan Sanson has admitted he had problems with Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa, hence his eventual departure from the club.
The midfielder has been speaking to RMC Sport about his time at Aston Villa and why he doesn’t regret his decision to depart.
Sanson joined Villa in a €15.8m deal from Marseille in January 2021 but would only go on to make 23 appearances for the club and 761 minutes in total in what was undoubtedly a disastrous period for his career.
The lack of appearances was largely down to a series of injuries and two battles with COVID but also a lack of appreciation from former Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard.
It was made clear throughout his reign that Sanson was not a player who he liked or wanted but an exit could not be secured for him.
He eventually left the club after Gerrard was replaced by Unai Emery, first joining Strasbourg on loan in January last year and then Nice in the summer.
Since then Aston Villa have been flying under the Spaniard’s leadership, but Sanson has no regrets, explaining the problem was very much with Gerrard.
“It was complicated because I was injured nine to ten months out of my first twelve months there,” he said.
“I had a series of injuries and I had Covid twice. Nothing worked out for me. I made the decision to leave when Unai Emery arrived, even though he would have liked to keep me.
“I told him that me and Aston Villa were over. Something there was wrong.
“I was sure of myself and my qualities but certain things went very badly with a coach at Aston Villa, it was a bit unfair. The problem is that it was Steven Gerrard who arrived instead of Unai Emery.”
