Turin newspaper Tuttosport have a look at Afriyie Acquah’s situation in their Saturday edition.
It had been thought Acquah was on the verge of a move to Birmingham City, but things fell to pieces over the past few days.
Tuttosport round up the reasons for that. It’s explained that after a long negotiation, Birmingham City’s offer, which is reported as €8m by the Turin newspaper, left Torino ‘shaken’.
That’s a clear hint the Italian club were minded to accept the money, or only ask for a little more to do the deal.
However, manager Siniša Mihajlović pulled the plug, suddenly declaring Acquah as indispensable and bringing the Birmingham City transfer to an end.
Tuttosport say Acquah’s commitment in training, and treating every game as if it’s a final, has impressed people at Torino, and that’s likely part of the reason Birmingham have been so keen.
It’s also explained that Mihajlović changing his system from 4-3-3 to 4-2-3-1 means Acquah is needed, regardless of what additions are made by Torino.
These all sound like good reasons, but none of them are sudden, things that won’t have been under thought for a while, so it makes the whole situation strange. Why even talk to Birmingham in the first place?
Acquah played well against Bologna last weekend, which perhaps convinced Torino the midfielder is worth more now. A poor performance against Sassuolo on Sunday could potentially change everything again.
Sources close to a deal informed Sport Witness this week that the transfer isn’t completely off, and there’s still hope a solution can be found.
