Billy Gilmour joined Napoli from Brighton after a long-winded transfer saga, with the Italian club trying to get themselves a bargain.

The Scotsman made a slow start to life in Italy but slowly things are improving.

At the weekend against Inter Milan in a huge Serie A clash, Gilmour started and impressed for Napoli, helping them to a vital 1-1 draw.

It was his best performance in a Partenopei shirt and this has led to Corriere dello Sport taking a detailed look at the midfielder’s time in Naples so far.

They describe Gilmour as ‘Billy the kid’, and explain how Antonio Conte first came across him as a teenager during his time at Chelsea.

Back then, the Italian identified the Scotland international as someone who could dictate play and make things tick from deeper midfield, similar to what he tried at Brighton.

That is exactly what happened against Inter, supporting midfield partner Stanislav Lobotka very well and also supporting Scott McTominay in attack when needed.

The outlet state that Conte played a key role in bringing Gilmour from Brighton, who earned €14m from his sale.

Napoli are enjoying the 23-year-old now and there is also praise for his attitude. He is described as someone who ‘stays silent’, ‘runs’ and ‘grows’ and believes in action rather than talking.

He is endearing himself to the Napoli faithful and things can still get better.
